Established in 1960 as one of the first Indian Institutes of Technology, the institute was created with the assistance of a consortium of nine US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP).

This Project is financed by the State Government with the objectives of providing  regular technical support to field staff. The main activities carried out in this project are organization of monthly work shops pre-seasonal workshop diagnostic  visits and development of suitable literature. The Directorate of Extension organized nine monthly workshops with the participation JDAs, DDAs, SOAEOs,  DAO, etc. A total of 303 officers representing six administrative division viz. Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Jhansi, Chitrakoot Dham, Allahabad and Scientist  participated in monthly workshops during 2002-03. Monthly workshops are strong mechanism of reviewing the progress of last month and developing strategy for  ensuing month.

Under this project three pre-seasonal workshops were also organised (Kharif,  Rabi and Zaid) during 2002-03 in order to finalize production strategy for entire crop season. A total of 544 agricultural officers attended pre seasonal workshops.
